What causes dry skin in babies?

Baby skin is sensitive and can get dry. What can you do to help your baby’s skin from becoming dry?

Let’s start by looking at what helped baby skin from not being dry before they were born.

Dry skin in the Womb

When babies are born, we often see them covered with a white substance. This is called Vernix caseosa, it protects the babies from the amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby.

Amniotic fluid protects the baby in the womb, it helps control the baby’s temperature helps the baby to move its limbs and contains antibiotics too.

Vernix caseosa is a cheesy-looking creamy, greasy substance. Vernix is made from the sebaceous glands that produce oil in the second trimester, so it acts as a moisturizer.

This is what stops a baby’s skin from being dry in the womb.

After birth, it’s natural and moisturizing, plus antibacterial properties keep baby skin supple and hydrated, so even if you are squeamish The World Health Organization (WHO)  recommends waiting at least 6 hours before wiping vermix off, baby. According to https://www.pampers.com/en-us/baby/newborn/article/vernix

This is an important consideration in the decision to avoid dry skin.

New-born babies go through many changes in the first few weeks of life.

One of them is adjusting to a drier environment outside the womb. Low and hot temperatures can cause bay skin to be dry.  Other common causes that cause babies to have dry skin are like the ones that cause dry skin in adults.

Breastfeeding will help to stop babies from being dehydrated and obtaining dry skin as a result.

Short baths with lukewarm water are recommended. Use baby-friendly soaps, baby washes. Overexposure in water for babies can cause their skin to be dry.

Check the ingredients and avoid products with sulfates, parabens, alcohol, or perfume as these can dry baby skin.

Cradle Cap is a recognizable and common dry skin condition in babies.  The large yellow or brown scales appear on the babies’ scalp or face.

The causes of cradle cap are not clear, but it is linked to the sebaceous glands which produce an oily substance called sebum.

Cradle cap can clear up in its own time, but you can gently wash babies' hair daily with a mild shampoo, you can follow it up with a moisturizing natural oil on the hair which will help loosen the crusty scales further.

I would recommend Olive oil or Shea oil. Try one here.
