What is Coily hair?

Coily hair can be described as the tightest type of curl. It is a ringlet or corkscrew in shape. Coily hair is more likely to shrink when dry leaving your hair looking fuller but shorter. as opposed to straight hair that looks flat and long.

Coily hair tends to be frizzier or looks drier as it is harder for the natural oil /sebum to travel down the hair shaft. When your hair is frizzy this means the cuticles of your hair (like fish scales) are open.

You need to adopt a routine that will help them to be flat. Read more here

How should you look after your Coily hair?

To look after your oily hair well, you need to know your hair type.

  1. What is your hair type?

You know your hair shape. It is coily, but learning your hair type i.e. hair porosity will not only give you knowledge of what products work for your hair, but it will also save you time and money in the process.

2. Choose the right type of shampoo for coily hair

Curly or Coily hair needs moisture, moisture, and more moisture. If your choice of shampoo contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl sulfate, etc Your hair will be squeaky clean, but you would have stripped the hair from its natural oils. Leaving your hair feeling drier and looking frizzy.

Choose a shampoo made with natural plant oils.  Use a shampoo with SLS very occasionally, when you feel there is a build-up of products on your hair.

3. Condition your Coily hair

After washing hair, always condition it. The role of your conditioner is to put back the moisture that may have been lost from shampooing.

If you have low porosity oily hair, use a conditioner with Aloe Vera or glycerine as one of its first ingredients.

If you have High porosity hair I will recommend a product with Shea oil, avocado oil Mango butter oil.

Avoid alcohol ethanol as it will dry your coils.

I would also advise you to avoid some silicones. Some are lighter and therefore better for your hair, while others are heavy and more prone to building up.

Look for a “breathable” silicone such as Cyclomethicone. It’s lightweight and water-soluble, so it can be easily washed out.

Amodimethicone and dimethicone are common, thicker types of silicone that can weigh down hair. It may take a few sessions with a clarifying shampoo to wash these particular types out.,

4. Finger comb

Finger comb while wet or use a wide-tooth comb, gently comb through hair starting at the ends to the root If your hair is longer, divide it into sections and add the product / natural oil with ingredients that work for your hair type on damp hair, lock in the moisture. I recommend Shea oil,  purchase Monshea shea oil here Avocado oil for high porosity hair and Aloe Vera product or glycerin product for low porosity oily hair.

When you do this process on damp here it absorbs the oil better.

5. Daily care

In between washes put 1 part oil, I part conditioner, and 5 parts water in a spray bottle and spritz hair daily or before styling. or combing. If hair Is looking particularly dry add some natural oil appropriate for your hair type direct to hair 2 or 3 times a week.

Monshea Shea oil is ideal for high porosity hair.

6. Sleep with a Satin or silk pillowcase

Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase or with a satin scarf tied around your hair at night may not be the most glamorous Iook. I  know, but your coils will love it!

This is because other materials will absorb moisture from your hair Plus friction when you move when you sleeping,  will cause your hair to be frizzy and dry.

If you have high porosity hair use Monshea shea oil as part of your hair care routine.
